This local government’s Salesforce practice was only a year old when the pandemic struck. In the face of the new normal, the state quickly expanded its Salesforce instance to cover human services, transportation, labor, education, natural resources and more. To support these operations, it brought on declarative admins, developers and testers.
But with rapid acceleration came growing pains — and this customer’s decentralized development team struggled to stay on the same page without a native DevOps solution.
Keeping a Decentralized Development Team in Lockstep
Multiple developers were working on the same Apex and Lightning components and having a tough time merging code. From change set nightmares to code-vetting headaches to testing bottlenecks, the state needed a better way to build and deploy on Salesforce.
“We didn’t know about apps going into production until they were already in there,” the organization’s Enterprise Architect says. “Changes were made directly in production and deployed without testing. It was out of control — the quality wasn’t there.”

This Northeast state integrated Copado with Azure DevOps to house the agencies’ user stories and sync them with the right metadata in real-time. The team configured an integration with OwnBackup for metadata recovery and sandbox seeding. Today, developers assemble their builds on this multi-cloud platform and push them to a staging so users can test everything before deployment.
