In 2016, Vero decided to overhaul their IT infrastructure and serve up a new online OmaVero (MyTax) service for both citizens and companies. With a budget of € 170 million, Vero's Valmis program was designed to optimize taxation across every bank, service provider and insurance firm in Finland.
To execute this project, Vero replaced 70 IT systems with one new platform (GenTax) that spanned hundreds of interfaces and dozens of development teams. However, as Vero began innovating their infrastructure, they began running into bugs and bottlenecks in the realm of manual regression testing.
From the beginning, Vero realized they needed a test automation solution to keep Valmis on track. Before Copado, they had run several other test automation pilot programs that fizzled and failed to drive value. Vero's industry and digital infrastructure presented several thorny challenges.
Copado established a test automation strategy across Vero's digital taxation software to execute automation in a testing environment. This enabled the Copado team to find 833 errors and reduce maintenance to 15% of the total testing effort.
Vero leveraged overnight automated testing to run 60 robots in parallel — executing the equivalent of 500 manual hours by 8 a.m. the following morning. Over the course of the Valmis program, Vero automated a total of 11.4 million test cases. Thanks to Copado Robotic Testing, Valmis launched seamlessly in 2021 — on time and on budget.
In the aftermath of the Valmis project launch, software engineers built on top of Vero's test automation infrastructure to develop QWeb: an open source library for web application testing. This community resource makes it easy for anyone to automate application tests and review scripts — bringing the power of test automation to every developer in Finland.
